Can a power station run a space heater?
Yes, for a short time on a big unit, but it is rarely a good use of your battery. See exactly how long it lasts and what to use instead.
Quick answer
A typical electric space heater draws about 750 W on low and 1,500 W on high. A power station needs an inverter that can deliver at least that much, and enough battery to last. A 1,000 Wh unit runs a 1,500 W heater for about 34 min and a 750 W heater for about 1.1 h. Even a 2,000 Wh unit gets only about 1.1 h on high.
Runtime table: heater vs battery size
Hours of runtime after 15% inverter loss, running continuously at full watts. A heater’s thermostat may cycle it on and off, so the average can be lower, but plan with the full figure. Check your heater’s label for its real wattage.
| Heater | 500 Wh | 1,000 Wh | 1,500 Wh | 2,000 Wh | 3,000 Wh | 5,000 Wh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low setting, 750 W | 34 min | 1.1 h | 1.7 h | 2.3 h | 3.4 h | 5.7 h |
| High setting, 1,500 W | 17 min | 34 min | 51 min | 1.1 h | 1.7 h | 2.8 h |
| Electric blanket, about 100 W | 4.2 h | 8.5 h | 12.8 h | 17.0 h | 25.5 h | 42.5 h |
Can a 1,000 Wh power station run a space heater?
It can only if its inverter delivers the heater’s watts continuously. Some units in this size can’t sustain 1,500 W, so check the output rating first. Even when it can, the battery lasts about 34 min on high, so a 1,000 Wh unit is not a heating solution.
How long will a 2,000 Wh power station run a space heater?
About 1.1 h on high or 2.3 h on low. That might warm a room before bed, but it will not last the night.
Can a power station run a 750 watt heater?
Yes, as long as the inverter output is comfortably above 750 W. Runtime is double that of a 1,500 W heater, for example about 1.1 h on 1,000 Wh.
Can a power station heat a room all night?
Not with a portable unit. Running a 750 W heater for 8 hours needs roughly 7,059 Wh of rated battery, which is more than the largest single unit in our size tiers. On high it needs about twice that.
How long will a power station run an electric blanket?
Much longer. A blanket typically draws around 100 W, so a 1,000 Wh unit runs one for about 8.5 h. Check your blanket’s label, since wattage varies by model.
Warmer for less power
- An electric blanket or heated mattress pad uses a fraction of a space heater’s power.
- Warm clothing, a cold-rated sleeping bag and closing off one small room cost no power at all.
- Connecting a furnace or other hardwired equipment to a power station is wiring work for a licensed electrician, and we don’t cover it here.
Staying safe
- Never use a gas stove or oven, a charcoal grill, a camp stove or a generator indoors for heat. They can fill a home with carbon monoxide.
- Keep a working carbon monoxide alarm.
- Plug a heater straight into the power station, not through a light extension cord or power strip, and never leave it running unattended.
Which size fits a 1,500 W heater for 2 hours?
That needs roughly 3,882 Wh once you allow for losses and a reserve. These sizes match.
Which size fits an electric blanket, router and phones overnight?
That needs roughly 1,268 Wh. These sizes match.
